PHOTOS - Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series
By David Stenhouse, Data Mutz
Taking photos has always been an interest. Armed with a Kodak 110 as a kid in the 70s and 80s, I would take photos of whatever I could, but at the same time being careful because I could only afford the 12-shot cartridge. In the present with digital equipment, that problem is gone and replaced by viewing too many photos to find just the right one.
I have never been stellar at taking photos, but I love trying. Until recently I used most of the standard auto settings to take shots. Now, I’m trying to increase my knowledge in what it takes to capture moments that catch the eye.
My rekindled interest in drag racing is well documented in my previous post about attending the 2021 NHRA Gatornationals. Recently, a Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event was hosted at Pacific Raceways in Kent, Washington. So, armed with my 15-year-old Nikon D40, I attended and snapped over 700 photos of the cars and the people behind them.
The respect I have for the professional motorsports photographer is off the charts. No matter the expense of equipment in the user’s hands, it is the user’s skills that takes the quality to the next level. The photographer’s subject matter is constantly moving—not only the cars but the people around the cars. It seems to be a constant juggle of camera settings and prospective shots being obscured by a person walking into the view, which is expected at these events.
The links on this page open up what I believe to be the most interesting of my shots. Some of these may not be the best photographs in the set, however, the scene may be of some quality. I enjoy capturing moments.
